SEDBERGH School was the toast of Twickenham after being honoured for its sporting achievements in 2011 at the Aviva School Sport Matters Awards.

Having been commended in the Independent School of the Year category, senior master Dan Harrison, director of sport Stuart Oliver and former pupil Nathan Morris attended the home of English rugby, where they rubbed shoulders with Olympic legends James Cracknall, Tim Brabants and David Goodhew.

Set up in 2004 – Aviva and the Daily Telegraph have worked together to showcase and celebrate developments in school sport.

Having produced former England captain Will Carling and World Cup winner Will Greenwood, Sedbergh’s brilliance on the rugby pitch falls firmly into that category, but Harrison was to pay tribute to the all around contribution of the school.

“We were very proud to be at Twickenham because we are a very small school, only 120 girls and 300 boys,” said Harrison.

“To do the amount of sport that we do at the level we compete is a good achievement. We don’t go chasing the plaudits but it’s a nice by-product of doing well and hopefully it will continue.

“We specialise in participation, not just the elite end so we are very keen to get all of our boys and girls involved as much as we can.”

The Aviva and Daily Telegraph School Sport Matters Awards recognise outstanding achievements in school sport across the country, and are part of Aviva’s wider commitment to support the next generation of British sporting talent. For more information go to aviva.co.uk/athletics
