JUNIOR athletes did Cumbria proud in the North of England Inter Counties cross country match at Stockton at the weekend.
Both boys and girls representing the Cumbria Schools Athletic Association steered the county to overall success against Northumberland, Cleveland, Durham and North Yorkshire at Preston Park.
There were some outstanding performances with Sedbergh School's Joe Bird winning the senior boys' race. Kirkbie Kendal School's Chris Richards was third as Cumbria finished first team.
Kendal's Hannah Russell was the highest placed Cumbrian in the senior girls' race coming fifth. The Cumbrians were first team.
In the Year 7 race, Cumbria's Fraser Sproul triumphed but the team had to settle for third.
Sam Almond was second in the junior boys' event and lead the team home to first. The junior girls' also took team honours with Olivia Mason and Chloe Rylance coming home first and second.
The intermediate boys had to settle for second despite a strong run from Joe Dugdale who was runner-up in the race. But the intermediate girls went one better with Emma Whitaker (1st), Imogen Burrow (3rd) and Esme Davies (4th) all packing well at the front end of the field.
