KENDAL captain Stu Parkin hopes his side’s late season good form will convince his current crop of players to stick together over the winter.

A comprehensive eight wicket win over Lancaster on Saturday saw Kendal record their third consecutive win and they could climb into sixth place if results go their way this weekend.

The Shap Road outfit also sit 15 points ahead of Netherfield and only need to pick up one point against St Annes to secure the bragging rights in terms of league position over their local rivals.

“We are coming into form towards the end of the season like we do every year,” said Parkin. “We are notoriously bad starters and unfortunately that has held to be true this campaign again.

“It is always good to finish with a winning streak. There is a lot of talk about lads retiring and moving on but I think if you can end the season with people enjoying their cricket it bodes well for next year and for decisions to be made over winter.

“People perhaps on the periphary looking to move on might look at the last few weeks and how we have enjoyed our cricket and make a decision to stay.

“Going into the last game we only need one more point to finish above Netherifled which would be a nice sense of achievement.”

Lancaster’s opening batsman Michael Barry hit 107 as they reached a total of 170 all out but Kendal, aided by the spellbinding form of Jamie How, their New Zealand professional who smashed 95 off 47 balls, eased to the target in 23 overs.

And Parkin admits the class of How was something to behold but insists the Kiwi was not too disheartened not to claim a century.

“Jamie decided he wasn’t hanging around,” said Parkin. “He showed his class and took a liking to one of their young opening bowlers.

“Rather than let the bowler bowl at him he dictated to them which is always great to see but obviously with a batsman of Jamie’s calibre he has that ability unlike us mere mortals.

“It would have been a fitting way for Jamie to end the season’s last home game. He was caught going for a six and unfortunately chose the longest boundary to go for it.

“It is just the way he plays. To be fair to Jamie he’s not one for milestones. He’s happy as long as the team wins which is really good for a captain to have in the team.”

Kendal finish their campaign away at St Annes on Saturday.
