EDEN exhibitors took home some of the top prizes from a weather hit Appleby Agricultural Show.

Rain had an impact on visitor numbers and contributed towards the churning up of the Barley Field showground.

But there was a good display of entries from those who turned out to support the show and many of the top exhibitors were from the local area.

An elegant British Blue beef cow called Croft Ends Edith was crowned overall cattle champion, owned by Jonty Bellas, of Croft Ends Farm in Appleby.

Mr Bellas credited the six-year-old home-bred champion's tremendous length, good feet and strong legs for its victory.

The 46-year-old show veteran said: "I'm absolutely over the moon, I'm really made up as I didn't expect it at all.

"This is my local show and it's a friendly show. There's not a vast amount of cattle but the quality is always outstanding – a lot of animals here have been at the Highland Show and the Yorkshire Show so the standard is very good.

"It's good to come and let people see what you're breeding, see what they're doing, and it's a good social event. Although we do battle in the ring we're all good buddies outside really."

The rosette for best sheep exhibit went to Richard Wilson's home-bred Texel Tup lamb, Eden Valley Youthful.

Mr Wilson, 35, of nearby Low Field Farm, Appleby, said: "It's got great character for a Texel, it's got a very good carcass and tremendous skin. It's an all round good lamb."

Tom Eccles, at the tender age of 13, took the gong for 'best bird in show.' The young poultry exhibitor, from Middleton-in-Teesdale, received the accolade for his dark-red partridge-bred Old English Game cockerel.

"I'm delighted, I had a great big grin on my face when I found out," he said. "We put oil on him to make him more red and washed its legs really well because it's always stood strongly, that's what will have caught the judges' eyes."

The annual Appleby show offers much more to the hundreds of visitors than cattle, sheep and poultry though, with an extensive line-up of impressive horses, ponies, and even much-loved family pets.

Traders from far and wide attend, arts and craft experts exhibit their creativity, and some of finest local vegetable growers and gardeners go head to head in the horticulture tent.
