SEDBERGH'S historic Pepperpot landmark was officially opened by Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron at a ceremony hosted by Sedbergh School on Saturday.

The building, which sits feet from the Dales Way, was opened as a community resource after being rebuilt, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s Sustainable Development Fund.

The 18-month project included work with local primary schools to share the history of the building through a story telling project as well as star- gazing and poetry events. Community groups are busy planning how they can use the building in the future to ensure it remains the thriving hub that it has been during the course of the project.

The building is also available for walkers to use as a rest stop. It has interpretive panels about the history of the building, the rich ecology of the natural environment and the astronomical appreciation in the area.

An art exhibition space currently displays a collection of art work by 18-year-old Sedbergh School pupil Anna Walkden. It includes Anna’s illustrations for During the formal opening event more than 100 visitors enjoyed a drinks reception. The Resonance Choir, with singers from across the UK, performed May songs to the assembled crowds .
