MILLOM School students were not only celebrating their own achievements but that they were part of a year group that chalked up record GCSE results.

Ninety-five per cent of the year group attained five or more A*-Cs, up seven per cent from last year’s result of 88%.

And using the Government’s preferred measure of five plus A*-Cs including English and Maths, the results stand at 59%, up 14% from last year’s result of 45%.

The 59% pass rate, including English and Maths, is the highest the school has ever achieved, surpassing the same indicator for Cumbria and nationally in 2010. “These results are superb,” said headteacher Ian Smith.”The headline figures speak for themselves, but beneath these summary results are some impressive individual stories.

“The results our students have achieved directly reflect the good and outstanding teaching Ofsted reported in July.

"The quality of teaching combined with the students’ diligence has enabled the school to reach new heights”.

The Director of Learning for Key Stage 4, Pam Atkinson, said: “The results are a testament to the hard work of both students and staff at the school.

"I would like to congratulate all students on their individual performances”.

Top performing GCSE students are Freyja Ingham with six A* and four A grades, Jozef Park with five A* and four A grades and Georgia Hughes with three A* and seven A grades.

Professor Colin Richards, Chairman of Governors, said: "This is very good news, particularly for the students themselves, but also for the community as a whole. Millom can be proud of its young people.

"It can also be proud of the professionalism and expertise of the school and its management."
