I received a letter the other day regarding a domain I own. To the untrained eye it would appear that another company has taken control and I now owe them £35 a year for that domain, when previously I paid nothing close to that amount. This company is based in the States and has a London office. It’s all too easy to assume, their clever wording, if read correctly, does advise should you wish to use their services then you will charged. The best thing to do in this case is bin that letter. If a web company registered the domain and manages that domain, then contact that company and ensure this is still the case. If, on the other hand, you purchased the domain yourself and can log into your control panel etcetera, then again, do throw this form in the bin. The letter does look rather official and as previously mentioned, to the untrained eye can be taken seriously. Another idea would be to look on whois.xreg.co.uk who will provide information on who that domain is registered to and also the contact emails, please ensure that the technical and admin details are your own and that the “registered” name is your business, it’s not uncommon for some web companies to register the domain in their company name, this makes life very hard for you in the future if you should ever have a dispute with them, they can retain the domain.
