What is the best thing about the Lakes?

Its a bit predictable but I've got to say the scenery. Wherever you are, you can always find a great view and they are all different; from watching sunsets over the Kent Estuary from Arnside prom; the striking valleys, mountains and lakes along the A591 toward Keswick; to the rolling hills of the Howgills. I love it that, no matter how busy the Lakes can be, its always possible to find a quiet spot somewhere.

And the worst?

The somewhat unpredictable micro-climate we seem to have and that the weather forecasters never get it right for us.

Favourite place in the Lakes?

High Dam Tarn at Finsthwaite near Newby Bridge. In my opinion it’s one of Lakeland's true beauty spots and also a firm favourite with the dog! It’s a beautiful walk up to the tarn, which is lined with Scots pines with a backdrop of rocky headlands and is much more peaceful than some of the other popular Lakes walks.

Favourite memory?

When we were younger and the weather was nice, we used to drive along the coast road from Barrow to Ulverston and stop for ice creams along the way.

Favourite shop/place to eat?

Two of my favourite things! Yew Tree Barn at Low Newton is a real gem and I can always find a special card or gift for someone in there. I love the Jumble Room in Grasmere but unfortunately I don't manage to get there as often as I'd like! The Wheatsheaf at Beetham is one of my favourites and their local lamb and sweet potato mash is delicious.

What would you change?

I would make it more accessible by public transport and improve existing links. There has been some good groundwork undertaken, however you still can’t get from the north of the county to the south by public transport after 8pm at the weekend.

Sum up the area in five words?

A must-visit holiday destination!
