Three cyclists who raised concerns after they didn't arrive at their destination in Coniston yesterday (April 30) revealed that they had spent the night in a barn.

The three mountain bikers were headed were riding from St Bees Head to Coniston and a friend raised the alarm after after they didn't turn up at their accommodation. 

A Garmin sat nav link proved useless as it wasn't clear how long they had cycled from their last known location in Eskdale.

Concerns began to grow as all three of their mobile phones went straight to voicemail and no Phonefind link had been responded to

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) along with Duddon & Furness and Wasdale MRTs were contacted around 00:41 and a search resumed in daylight the following morning upon the advice of Cumbria police. 

The teams resumed at 7.30am however half an hour later, one of their wives confirmed all three were safe and headed back to civilisation. 

A spokesperson for Coniston MRT said: "They had some technical issues with the bike/s, which hindered their progress, and then encountered access problems along the route.

"They decided to take refuge in a barn late that evening, but due to loss of signal, were unable to contact anyone.

"In the morning, they were able to use a land line at one of the local houses and let everyone know they were safe and well. Best outcome."
