A CHARITY has opened a new bookshop in Kendal.

Kendal and District Lions Club closed its premises at Westmorland Shopping Centre in December and were left looking for a new spot.

However, three months later the charity was able to secure a new space in Wainwright's Yard opposite Pizza Express.

Customers attended the official opening on Friday, March 29.

"It was amazing - we had old customers, new customers," said charity member Alyson Audsley.

"Wainwright's Yard is a well-known yard because it goes to Booths and we will have more opportunities for different people to see the shop and use it.

"On Friday and Saturday we had people who come by who had not known us before and we have had a book shop in Kendal since 2015 in various locations so even now we are still getting local people saying that they did not know we existed - it is an opportunity to expand our customer base."

"It is good that we found a replacement because we also have people who come in and do not necessarily want a book but want to talk to people.

"We are there as a community support."

Apart from selling donated adult books for £1 and children's books for 50p, the shop also offers jigsaw puzzles and DVDs.

"We have people who give us more money than that because they know that we are doing it for a good cause," she said.

Kendal and District Lions Club will be open on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10am until 4pm.

Kendal & District Lions Club forms part of Lions Clubs International, the world's largest club organisation with 1.35 million members and more than 45,000 clubs around the globe.
