AN ELECTRIC blanket started a bed fire in Crooklands, near Kendal on yesterday evening.

The blanket, which was connected to the main power socket, was placed on a bed when it caught fire.

The smoke alarm had alerted the residents, who extinguished the fire but called fire services to ensure it was done correctly.

The fire services, consisting of two vehicles and ten firefighters, were called out at 6.54pm.

The firefighters used a large fan to remove smoke from the property, gave the residents fire safety advise and fitted them with a new smoke alarm.

Following this incident, the fire services would like to remind the public of the necessity of a smoke alarm.

One alarm should be kept in each floor of the house, and should be regularly tested to make sure it is working.

Owners of an electric blanket should also have the blanket regularly checked for safety, which can be done through Cumbria County Council's trading standards team.

An electric blanket should also come with a safety warranty.
