ANOTHER name has been added to the list of celebrity engagements to have taken place in the Lake District.

Pippa Middleton, sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, agreed to tie the knot with her financier boyfriend James Matthews while holidaying in the area over the weekend.

The couple are believed to have been walking on the Lake District fells when Mr Matthews dropped onto one knee and popped the question.

A brief statement from the couple said: "Miss Pippa Middleton and Mr James Matthews are delighted to announce they became engaged on Sunday, July 17 and plan to marry next year."

The Gazette has contacted a number of hotels in the area, however all have remained tight-lipped over where it was that the couple were staying.

Rachel Tyson, Head of Marketing and Sales at Cumbria Tourism said: “The Lake District is the perfect place to get engaged as we have the most beautiful scenic landscapes, luxurious places to stay and fantastic restaurants to celebrate that special occasion, making us the destination of choice for the ultimate romantic getaway.”

The couple have been together for less than a year, however it is known that they have been living together and went to watch the tennis at Wimbledon.

Mr Matthews is the older brother of former Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews, who recently left the show after five seasons.

Other famous names to have agreed to tie the knot in the Lake District include an American President and a former Beatle.

Bill Clinton proposed to current Presidential hopeful Hilary on the shores of Ennerdale, while Sir Paul McCartney asked Heather Mills to marry him at the Sharrow Bay Hotel on Ullswater while holidaying in the area in 2001.

Polls regularly place the Lake District as the top location in the UK for proposals, supporting suggestions that Mr Matthews was inspired by the scenery when he decided to ask Miss Middleton.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are said to be 'absolutely delighted' at the news.
