100 years ago The post handling system had been re-arranged this week, meaning there was new agreement in how the post was delivered. The change meant the mail would now be transported by motor van from Ambleside to Coniston, via Hawkshead, twice a day.
It was hoped the risk of missing the evening outgoing mail train at Windermere would vanish by giving up the motorcycle and side-car, which frequently got stranded.
50 years ago Heavy snow caused many roads in Kendal to be blocked. Closed roads appeared throughout North and South Cumberland and Westmorland leaving many drivers stranded.
Lorry drivers were unable to reach their south bound destinations meaning there was a back-log on Kendal Hill as drivers opted to stay there rather than seek places in the town centre.
25 years ago Owners of Kendal printing firm Titus Wilson have called in the receivers following a trading slump. Four workers have been made redundant and a question mark is now hanging over the future of the remaining 13 staff employed by the firm.
