A 24-year-old woman has died after falling from Haystacks and another woman also had to be winched to safety.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team were called out at about 4pm on Wednesday, July 1, to reports that a woman had suffered a serious fall in the Buttermere Valley.

The woman, named by police as Victoria Harris from Manchester, was airlifted to the Cumberland Infirmary but was pronounced dead on arrival having suffered significant head injuries.

She was out walking with her mother,  Carol Allenby-Carr, who was also rescued but suffered only minor injuries.

Ms Allenby-Carr took to Facebook to pay tribute to her daughter.

She wrote: "I am so sad to say my beautiful daughter and soul mate Victoria died yesterday in a tragic accident whilst we were out walking.

"She was a wonderful daughter, and I don't know how we are going to get over it. Sleep tight with the angels my little beauty."
